Lesson 1
The Foundation of Generosity
Scripture: Genesis 14:17-20; Malachi 3:8-12 (NRSV)
Key Theme— Generosity is not a New Testament innovation. It is woven into Scripture's earliest stories, long before any commandment required it. When we offer God the first and the best of what we have, we confess that nothing we hold is truly our own. The tithe is the floor of grateful response, the measurable shape of a heart that trusts God to provide.
Lesson 2
The Heart Behind the Gift
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15; Mark 12:41-44 (NRSV)
Key Theme— God is not impressed by the size of the check. God is moved by the posture of the giver. A small gift offered gladly outweighs a large gift offered grudgingly, because heaven measures cost differently than earth does. When generosity rises from a willing heart, it joins a divine economy in which our giving becomes someone else's provision and someone else's thanksgiving.
Lesson 3
The Purpose of Generous Giving
Scripture: Deuteronomy 14:22-29; Acts 4:32-37 (NRSV)
Key Theme— Tithes and offerings are not religious taxes. They are instruments designed to build community, sustain ministry, and protect the vulnerable. God did not invent the tithe arbitrarily; God built it for specific work. It supports those who serve, provides for those in need, and funds the celebrations that knit a people together. When generosity moves through a community of faith, it changes both the ones who give and the ones who receive.
Lesson 4
The Blessing of Faithful Stewardship
Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24; Luke 16:10-13 (NRSV)
Key Theme— Generosity is finally a question of lordship. The way we handle money discloses who actually rules our hearts. Faithful giving is a quiet declaration that God, not wealth, sits on the throne. Faithful stewardship of small resources qualifies us for greater kingdom responsibility; unfaithfulness in small things disqualifies us from larger trust. Our financial decisions are spiritual decisions, and they carry eternal weight.
