Lesson 1
The Heart of Fasting
Scripture: Isaiah 58:1-12; Joel 2:12-13 (NRSVUE)
Key Theme— True fasting is far more than going without food. It is a wholehearted turning toward God that reshapes both the inner life and outward action. God desires a fast that moves beyond religious ritual into genuine repentance, compassion for the oppressed, and justice for the marginalized. When we fast with sincere hearts, we make room for God to work deeply within us and powerfully through us to heal a broken world.
Lesson 2
Fasting in Secret
Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18; Matthew 9:14-17 (NRSVUE)
Key Theme— Jesus assumes that his followers will fast, but he transforms the practice from public performance into private devotion. Its reward comes not from human admiration but from the Father who sees in secret. Jesus also gives fasting a new horizon: in his presence, fasting takes on fresh meaning as we await his return and seek deeper intimacy with him.
Lesson 3
Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough
Scripture: Mark 9:14-29; Acts 13:1-3; Acts 14:21-23 (NRSVUE)
Key Theme— Some spiritual battles call for the intensified prayer and deepened dependence that fasting provides. The early church fasted at critical moments of decision and transition, recognizing that certain situations demand a deeper level of focus and surrender. Fasting prepares us to receive direction from the Holy Spirit and strengthens us to confront evil in ways that ordinary prayer alone cannot.
Lesson 4
The Rewards of Fasting
Scripture: Daniel 9:1-6, 17-23; Luke 2:36-38 (NRSVUE)
Key Theme— Those who fast with sincere hearts receive remarkable rewards: deeper intimacy with God, clearer spiritual perception, and the privilege of sharing in God’s redemptive purposes. Daniel’s fasting opened the door to divine revelation, while Anna’s lifelong devotion positioned her to recognize the Messiah. Fasting is investment in eternal things, yielding returns that far outweigh the passing discomfort of self-denial.
